Overview

Communication is a vital skill for students, especially when they transition from university to the professional world. Together with Dr Tsao at HKU, we designed a two-hour workshop that aims to provide HKU undergraduate students with a solid foundation in effective workplace communication and equip them with essential conflict resolution strategies.

1. Lesson plan

Based on students’ feedback on the previous workshop, I have designed 4 learning outcomes and incorporated them into the workshop content in my lesson plan.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

Participants will be able to:

  1. Learn a few basic concepts for effective workplace communication;

  2. Understand different conflict resolution styles and their characteristics;

  3. Learn how to work and maintain relationships with different styles of managers, supervisors and colleagues, and;

  4. Apply influencing techniques in roleplayed professional settings.

2. Pre-class activities

I have designed a dynamic Notion page where students can dive into pre-workshop activities and access a wealth of additional learning resources. This interactive platform will empower students to actively engage with the workshop content and prepare themselves for the class.

3. Pre-class self-introduction and goal sharing

I created a Padlet page for students to introduce themselves and share their learning goals before the workshop, so that they can get to know each other better and monitor their learning progress.

4. Miro page

I designed and used a Miro page during the workshop to facilitate student online interactions and collaborations. With Miro's interactive features, students were able to engage in real-time brainstorming, visual collaborations, and dynamic discussions, taking the workshop experience to new heights of excitement and productivity.

5. Promotional materials

I've created two versions of posters: one for general promotion on campus, providing more program details, and another for social media promotion with fewer details.

Final Deliverable(s)

The two-hour workshop took place via Zoom. Various online collaboration tools, such as Notion and Zoom breakout rooms, were used to facilitate online interactions.

After the workshop, to facilitate their extrinsic motivation, students are required to submit a 500-word reflective essay to obtain a certificate of participation.
